The perfect guide to Marrakech and what inspired me to write it.

A little bit about me..
Hello, and a very warm welcome to my blog. My name is Freebird Tracey, and I’m a regular visitor to Marrakech. From the first time I heard Crosby Stills and Nash singing Marrakesh Express and read about the famous Hippie trails in the 1960s, I was eager to go there. I’m basically a ‘boho hippie’ who is drawn to colour, incense, and anything that jingles and jangles.
Marrakech is so much more than that, though. It’s an ancient city steeped in history. I was interested to learn about the Amazigh culture and the Saadian dynasty. I wanted to get lost in the souks and visit all the spectacular palaces with their beautiful architecture. I dreamt about tasting the delicious food I’d heard so much about and immersing myself in the vibrant culture.
The famous hospitality of the Moroccan people is known the world over. I was excited to meet some of the locals and share a few of their fascinating stories. However, I had to wait patiently.I had four children and two dogs to look after. For a long time, they were my life and my main priority. Raising a family made travelling to exotic locations difficult, I was a single mum and had to work hard, just to provide the basics.
Fast forward to the present. I am now a free spirit living my best life. My family has grown up and spread their wings. I am now able to visit places I have always wanted to. I became a solo female traveller in 2022, and since then, I have never looked back.
Marrakech captured my heart the first time I visited, and yet, I had barely scratched the surface. I was destined to return. It has now become like a second home to me. When I’m not visiting Marrakech, I’m busy planning my next trip. When I’m not planning a trip, I’m reading books about Marrakech and dreaming about my next visit. You could say that I’m pretty much hooked. One thing I can say is, “I doubt Crosby Stills and Nash had ever been to Marrakech when they wrote that song”

I began this blog as a way of documenting my time in Marrakech. It’s like a personal memoir, and it keeps every experience alive for me. I would also like it to be a guide for others to use. You could call it a ‘fingertip tour around Marrakech’ to help you plan your own journeys. I would love other people to appreciate the wonders of the ancient red city as much as I do.
I understand Marrakech can be a culture shock for first-time visitors. The crowds of tourists, and the over stimulation in the main square. The pace can be very hectic and often feels overwhelming. Despite that, it’s an amazing destination for all age groups. Whether you’re a group of friends, a family, or a solo traveller, Marrakech is an experience like no other. With some insight and careful planning, you can be sure to get the most out of your visit to Marrakech. That’s where I come in, and my inspiration for writing this guide.
Morocco really is one of the most beautiful countries on earth. The landscape is diverse. From snowcapped mountains to dry desert terrain. Tourism continues to grow as more people realise what a great destination it is. Marrakech is fast becoming one of the most visited cities in the world. There is a wealth of history and cultural significance, and many places to explore.
My blog is a working progress, a labour of love. I regularly update it, adding things I think will benefit my readers. Hopefully, my own personal experiences and knowledge of Marrakech will be helpful. It may offer you inspiration when putting together an itinerary. All photographs have been produced by myself, and any reviews are genuine and from the heart. I write independently based on my own experiences and not affiliated by any third party.
Throughout this blog, my main focus is on the historical ancient medina. A UNESCO world heritage site, and the city of 1001 Arabian Nights. Although the newer parts of the city known as Gueliz and Hivernage are excellent places to visit, I only touch on them here. My heart has been captured by the old walled city known as the medina. The main square is the heartbeat of the city. It’s here where you will experience snake charmers, storytellers, and an electric atmosphere. The magical sounds of the souks will stay with you forever. I invite you to come along with me and discover what makes Marrakech an alluring and captivating city.
Welcome to ‘my happy place.’ it’s great to have you on board..
